Hair color analysis by season

The hair color that suits you repeats your undertone and keeps your natural contrast: warm seasons glow in golden, copper and chestnut, cool seasons in ash, beige and espresso, and soft seasons in blended, low-contrast shades. Three rules of hair color analysis

  1. 1

    Match the temperature

Golden and copper tones for warm undertones, ash and beige for cool. A mismatch shows first as redness or sallowness on the skin.

  2. 2

    Keep your contrast

High-contrast people (dark hair, light skin, clear eyes) lose sparkle when they go much lighter; low-contrast people look harsh with very dark dye.

  3. 3

Stay within two levels for low maintenance

Shades within two levels of your natural color grow out softly and suit your brows.

Going grey? Silver and salt-and-pepper are cool and work best on Summer and Winter; warm seasons can soften grey with golden lowlights.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What hair color suits warm skin?

Golden blonde, honey, caramel, copper, auburn and chestnut. Deep warm skin looks rich in chocolate and mahogany.

What hair color suits cool skin?

Ash and beige blondes, mushroom and ash browns, cool dark brown, espresso and soft black. Avoid brassy gold and orange copper.

Should I dye my hair to match my season?

Not necessarily. Your natural color already fits your coloring; the season tells you which direction to go if you want a change.

Is a hair try-on accurate?

It shows the shade on your face in the same light as your photo, which is what matters for flattery. The exact salon result depends on your base and the dye.
