Undertone test: warm, cool or neutral?

An undertone test tells you whether the color under your skin surface leans warm (golden, peachy), cool (pink, bluish), neutral or olive. Take the free undertone test below: three questions about your veins, gold or silver and white or cream, answered in daylight, give an instant result. Your undertone is the first half of your color season, so it is the best place to start.

Quick undertone check

Three questions, about 30 seconds. Answer in daylight.

In daylight, what color are the veins on your inner wrist?

Look without a lamp on, arm relaxed.

Which jewelry makes your skin look clearer?
Held under your chin, which white flatters you?

Four ways to do an undertone test at home

  1. 1

    The vein undertone test

Look at the inside of your wrist by a window. Blue or purple veins suggest a cool undertone, green or olive veins a warm undertone, a mix a neutral undertone. Skin thickness and light both affect it, so combine it with the other checks.

  2. 2

The gold or silver undertone test

Hold gold and silver against your skin. The metal that makes your skin look clearer and more even, not grey or yellow, points to your undertone. Run the jewelry check.

  3. 3

The white or cream undertone test

Hold pure white and cream fabric under your chin. A cool undertone brightens in white; a warm undertone glows in cream and looks pale in stark white.

  4. 4

    The sun undertone test

Burning easily and turning pink leans cool; tanning golden leans warm. Deep skin often tans without burning either way, so this is the weakest undertone clue.

Undertone test results: warm, cool, neutral and olive

An olive undertone is the one most undertone tests get wrong: its green cast makes cool and warm colors both look acceptable, so it reads as neutral. If your undertone test result says neutral and you know your skin turns slightly green under fluorescent light, read the olive skin guide.

Why your undertone test result can change

  • Lamps and screens: warm bulbs push any undertone test toward warm, blue screens toward cool. Repeat it by a window.
  • Makeup and self-tan: foundation and bronzer repaint your undertone; test bare skin.
  • A summer tan: it deepens your skin but does not change your undertone.
  • Redness: rosacea or flushing can look cool; check the jaw and neck, not only the cheeks.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is the vein undertone test accurate?

It is a hint, not a verdict. Vein color depends on skin thickness and light. Combine it with gold vs silver and white vs cream; when two of three undertone tests agree, trust that.

What if my undertone test shows green and blue veins?

That usually means a neutral undertone. Neutral people can wear both metals and do best in colors that are not extreme in warmth.

Does a tan change my undertone?

No. A tan changes your surface color and depth, not your undertone. That is why an undertone test asks about daylight and untanned skin.

Can dark skin have a cool undertone?

Yes. Deep skin can have a warm, cool, neutral or olive undertone. A cool undertone on deep skin often looks best in jewel tones, pure white and silver.

Which undertone test is the most reliable?

White vs cream in daylight is usually the clearest, because it shows the whole face. Use the vein and metal tests to confirm.
